Pulmonary Rehabilitation
Pulmonary rehabilitation is a program of exercise, education and
psychosocial support for persons with chronic lung disease and
their families. Pulmonary rehabilitation is designed to help people
with chronic lung disorders regain as much breathing capacity as
possible. A pulmonary rehabilitation program assists people in
learning to control the symptoms of lung disease, while working
to achieve and maintain their maximal level of independence and
functioning in the community, thereby improving their quality of
life.
This program requires a physician's order and may or may not be
covered by insurance plans. Please check with your physician to
see if this program would benefit you.
Pulmonary Rehabilitation includes:
- Monitoring of heart and oxygen content during exercise,
by the same staff that supervises the Phase II cardiac rehab
program.
- Educational services covering many of the same topics in the Phase
II program.
- A structured program designed for you individually by the rehabilitation
team.
The goals of pulmonary rehabilitation include:
- Reduction of emergency room visits and hospitalizations
related to lung disease.
- Reduction of respiratory symptoms, such as shortness of breath
- Reversal of anxiety and depression
- Increased knowledge about pulmonary disease and its management
- Increase exercise tolerance and performance
- Enhanced ability to perform activities of daily living
- Increased survival in some patients
- Return to work for some patients
