Facilty Updates at KRHC

Kossuth Regional Health Center operates from a Master Facility Plan, a document approved by the KRHC Board of Trustees that provides an overall look at the KRHC campus and facility to determine the best and most efficient way to use the existing space and accommodate the needs of the rapidly changing health care environment.

Emergency Room and Lab

The emergency rooms and lab underwent a complete renovation in 2012-2013.  The improvements created a more private and user-friendly space for patients and staff, plus upgraded equipment used in the ER.

Dialysis Expansion and Relocation

Dialysis service at Kossuth Regional Health Center will be increasing its number of chairs and moving to a new location.  At the April 2012 hospital board of trustees meeting, the KRHC board voted to approve the purchase of a building that formerly served as the Lynch Law office on Call Street.  This building will be utilized for dialysis and possibly other services such as sleep studies.  Dialysis is made available at KRHC through a partnership with Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa.  KRHC will continue to serve as the landlord for the new space, and will lease the area to Mercy – North Iowa; dialysis services will continue to be provided by Mercy Dialysis Center.  The new space is large enough to host eight dialysis chair units, which will be an increase from the five chairs that are currently available. The space required for this number of chairs led the board to seek potential locations outside of the KRHC campus. Construction will likely begin in the fall of 2012.

Obstetrics Suites
The three obstetrics suites underwent renovation in 2012 to add new flooring, ceilings, furnishings and equipment.  Rooms were done one at a time so obstetrics patients could continue to receive care throughout the project.  Previous to these changes, the Family Birthing Center opened at Kossuth Regional Health Center in May 1995. The Obstetrics department was relocated from the second floor to the east wing of the third floor, immediately adjacent to the Medical-Surgical unit, to allow for the most efficient use of staff resources.  Three maternity suites were renovated to be utilized for Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum (LDRP).

Three Story Hospital Addition

KRHC broke ground on the three story addition in March of 2009 and completed the project in the spring of 2011.  The hospital’s addition allowed for all private inpatient rooms, an expanded rehabilitation area, new pre-operative and recovery rooms for surgical patients and a new dining center.  The space created allowed KRHC to convert all the rooms on the inpatient floor to single, private rooms, move physical therapy from the lower level of the hospital to a new, larger area on the second floor and provide more space for surgery recovery.  The new additional also included space for a new cafeteria and dining center, additional conference rooms, loading dock and storage for the purchasing department.

Transition to a Tobacco Free Campus
On November 16, 2006, Kossuth Regional Health Center became a tobacco free campus. This initiative applies to all staff, patients and visitors and includes cigarettes, chewing tobacco and all other forms of tobacco. The policy does not allow any tobacco products in the KRHC facility, in the parking lots, in personal vehicles on KRHC grounds or in KRHC vehicles (at any time on or off campus).

Surgery Renovation and Expansion
Construction for the Surgery Renovation & Expansion project began in March 2000 and the Ribbon Cutting was held in May 2001. The project provides a state of the art surgical facility for our general surgeon and the many specialists who see patients in this facility on a regular basis. The improved and enlarged facility allows more sophisticated procedures to be performed at KRHC. The Kossuth Regional Health Center Foundation raised $750,000 to help fund this project.

The Link
Kossuth Regional Health Center completed The Link in the summer of 1999. This project created two new physician suites, administrative offices and conference room, rehab services in the lower level and a common entrance for the hospital and physician clinic. It also created a larger and much more visible Gift Shop, run entirely by the KRHC Auxiliary.

Emergency Care & Outpatient Services
Responding to the changes in the health care industry towards more comprehensive outpatient services and addressing the inadequacies of a 1949 facility, June 1991, marked the completion of the John & Agnes Dreesman Memorial Addition. The 11,000 square foot construction project and 9,000 square foot renovation project replaced the Emergency Room, Radiology, Laboratory, Business Offices and Outpatient Specialty Clinics.
