Women needing annual screening mammograms can now schedule their own appointments directly with Ellsworth Municipal Hospital, according to Nicki Prochaska, Director of Imaging Services at EMH.
Beginning in April 2012, EMH began booking mammogram appointments for women (age 40 or older) that need annual screening mammogram without requiring a written order from their physician. This patient-driven process is available to any woman age 40 or older that has no history of breast symptoms or complaints. In the past, a physician’s order was required. Scheduling was done through the physician as well which was not always the most convenient for the patient.
“We want all women over 40 to have convenient access to annual screenings,” Prochaska emphasized. “Early detection results in more survivors of breast cancer, and the best rates of detection are achieved with annual mammograms and annual breast exams by a trained medical provider.”
The new scheduling option maintains a direct connection between physician and patient. Screening results are expedited to the patient’s local healthcare provider for review. The process also protects those who have a history of breast issues.
“Any woman who has reported breast symptoms or complaints are still referred to their primary care provider before getting a mammogram to ensure the symptoms are properly evaluated,” Prochaska emphasized.
The American Cancer Society recommends a yearly screening mammogram for all women age 40 and above. Any woman age 40 or older that is due for a yearly screening mammogram may call 641-648-7025 to schedule the exam directly.
